Industrial automation software is not one product — it is a stack of distinct categories, each doing a different job between the sensor and the boardroom. Buyers searching for "automation software" are usually looking for one specific layer without knowing its name yet. This guide is the map.
1. PLC programming software
Where control logic gets written — ladder logic, function blocks, structured text — then downloaded to the PLC and monitored live. Tied to the controller brand:

- TIA Portal — Siemens, the global heavyweight, dominant in Europe.

- Match your controller ecosystem first — friction between PLC brand and HMI/SCADA choice is a tax paid forever.
- Interrogate licensing. Per-tag, per-client, per-server models change total cost by multiples at scale; this is where Ignition reshaped the market.
